About Us

Susan Carnell and Mike Lorenger, both former partners in Hogan & Hartson LLP's Labor and Employment Group, founded Lorenger & Carnell, PLC in February 2007 in order to provide their clients with top notch legal services at small-firm rates. The firm's practice is focused on representing employers in both litigation and counseling.

Before striking out on their own in 2007, Susan and Mike served as partners in the Labor & Employment Group of the high-powered Washington, D.C. law firm of Hogan & Hartson LLP, where they represented national and international companies in all aspects of labor and employment litigation, counseling and training. During their many years with this high-profile group, Mike and Susan confronted on a daily basis the most complex personnel issues employers face, and in the process acquired a detailed understanding of – and a deep appreciation for – the complicated and often convoluted legal issues that threaten nearly every employment-related decision.

Susan and Mike also found, however, that as the legal issues facing employers grew more complicated, the ever-increasing cost of legal services caused even the largest companies to forego legal advice on day-to-day personnel issues, eliminate much-needed training, and pay out significant settlements in response to meritless claims rather than defend themselves in court.

Thus, in 2007 they opened a small boutique dedicated solely to the representation of employers in employment-related disputes. Drawing on their twenty years of combined experience, acquired in representing employers ranging in size from a few employees to a few hundred thousand, Mike and Susan provide their clients with the same capable training, practical advice, and aggressive litigation defense offered by the largest law firms, but at a fraction of the cost.
